1970s and 80s homes in Oak Flats and Albion Park: common electrical upgrades

Much of Oak Flats, Albion Park and Warilla was built in the 70s and 80s. These homes are solid, but their electrics were designed for a very different way of living.

We service a large area including Wollongong, the Illawarra and Shoalhaven regions, including Nowra, Kiama, Helensburgh & surrounding regions. See all areas we cover

Lighting

Single batten holders and fluorescent tubes are common. Swapping to LED downlights or modern ceiling fittings brightens rooms and cuts running costs.

Switchboard capacity

Boards from this era often have too few circuits and limited safety switch protection. Adding air-con, an induction cooktop or an EV charger usually means an upgrade.

Power points

Kitchens and living rooms from the 70s rarely have enough outlets. Adding doubles where you need them is a quick, tidy job.

Smoke alarms

Older battery-only alarms are worth replacing with hardwired, interconnected units, especially in bigger homes.

Ceiling fans

With good roof access, fans are a simple addition that makes the lake-side summers more comfortable.

Start with a check

A switchboard and safety check tells you what's urgent and what's nice to have, so you can plan upgrades in the right order.
