Does it need its own circuit?
Small split systems can sometimes run from an existing circuit, but most larger units need a dedicated circuit straight from the switchboard. It means the air-con isn't competing with the kettle and the oven on a 40-degree day.
The outdoor isolator
The outdoor unit needs an isolating switch next to it, so it can be safely switched off for servicing. On the coast, that isolator should be a quality weather-rated one, as they're a common failure point.
Check the switchboard first
A new circuit needs space and capacity in the board. Older boards with ceramic fuses often can't take one without an upgrade. We check before the install day, so there are no surprises.
Coordinating the installer
Many air-con installers handle the refrigeration side and leave the electrical to an electrician. We work with your installer, or with the unit you've bought, and get the circuit ready before they arrive.
Ducted systems
Ducted air-con draws more power again and often needs a bigger circuit. It's worth planning early, especially in a renovation or new build.
