Why do it before handover
Running cable through open frames is quick and clean. Once the plasterboard is up, the same job means cutting holes, patching and painting.
Upgrades worth considering
- Extra double power points in the kitchen, living areas and bedrooms.
- An EV charger circuit to the garage, even if you don't own an EV yet.
- Data points to the TV, study and roof space for the Wi-Fi access point.
- Outdoor power and lighting for the alfresco and side paths.
- Ceiling fan wiring in the bedrooms and living area.
- Conduit to the switchboard for future solar or battery.
Using your own electrician
Some builders let you bring your own electrician for extras, some don't. Ask early. If they don't, you can still plan the post-handover work now so the cabling path is ready.
After you move in
If you've already moved in, a lot can still be done neatly. The roof space in most new homes is easy to work in, which keeps the cost of adding downlights, fans and power down.
