Never plug a generator into a power point
Plugging a generator into a house outlet with a double-ended lead can send power back out into the street wiring. That's dangerous for line workers and for you. It's also illegal.
Install a generator inlet
The safe way is a generator inlet and changeover switch fitted by a licensed electrician. It isolates your home from the grid, so you can power chosen circuits like the fridge, lights and a few power points.
Run it outside
Generators produce carbon monoxide. Never run one inside, in the garage or near an open window.
Plan what you'll power
- Fridge and freezer.
- A few lights.
- Phone and internet charging.
- A water pump, if you're on tank water.
Before the season starts
Test the generator, store fuel safely and know how to switch over. If you're on a rural block, make sure the water pump is on a circuit the generator can supply.
