Running power to a shed, studio or granny flat

A workshop, studio or granny flat needs proper power, not an extension lead across the lawn. Here's how it's done.

We service a large area including Wollongong, the Illawarra and Shoalhaven regions, including Nowra, Kiama, Helensburgh & surrounding regions. See all areas we cover

Underground cable

Power is usually run underground in conduit, at the depth the wiring rules require, with marker tape above it. We plan the route to avoid pipes, trees and future landscaping.

A sub-board in the building

Most outbuildings get their own small switchboard with circuit breakers and safety switches. That way you can switch the building off on its own, and faults stay local.

Size the cable for what you'll run

A garden shed with a light needs far less than a granny flat with a kitchen and air-con, or a workshop with welders and compressors. Tell us what you'll use so the cable and board are sized right the first time.

Main switchboard capacity

A granny flat is effectively a second home. We check the main board and supply can handle it, and upgrade if needed.

Add data at the same time

If you're trenching anyway, add a conduit for data cabling. It's much cheaper now than digging again later.
