Sensor lights: where to put them and how to set them

Good sensor lighting makes coming home at night safer and puts off intruders. Badly placed, it switches on for every possum and shines into the neighbour's bedroom.

We service a large area including Wollongong, the Illawarra and Shoalhaven regions, including Nowra, Kiama, Helensburgh & surrounding regions. See all areas we cover

The best spots

  • Front door and entry, so you can find keys and see who's there.
  • Driveway and garage door.
  • Side passages and bin areas.
  • Back door and alfresco.

Stopping false triggers

Sensors pick up movement and heat. Aim them away from roads, trees that move in the wind and heat sources like air-con units. Adjust sensitivity and range so they cover your path, not the footpath.

Set the timer sensibly

One to three minutes is enough for most spots. Longer just wastes power and annoys neighbours.

Aim down, not out

Floodlights pointed downward light the ground where you need it and cause less glare. Neighbours will thank you.

Choose fittings for the coast

Outdoor lights near the sea need a suitable weather rating and corrosion-resistant materials, or they fail early.
